Newcastle ocean baths: which pool to swim at today
Four free ocean pools along the coast. Here's which one suits you today, when they close for cleaning, where to park and where to get a coffee after.
Newcastle has four ocean baths, all free and all within a short drive of the city. Pick the one that suits you below: each shows whether it's open today.
Newcastle Ocean Baths
Closed Wednesdays for cleaning

The classic Newcastle swim, at the north end of Newcastle Beach. There's a 50 metre lap pool for serious swimmers and a big general pool next to it for everyone else, with a timber catwalk between the two that kids love jumping off.
It's free, lifeguarded and has hot showers. The aqua steps above the water are the best spot in town to sunbake between swims. The small car park fills early on warm days, so get there early.

The Canoe Pool
Closed Wednesdays for cleaning

The best ocean pool in Newcastle for little kids. It's shallow, calm and wave-free, so toddlers can paddle while you sit at the edge.

The Bogey Hole
Always open · No lifeguard

The most beautiful swim in Newcastle on a calm day: a small rock pool carved into the cliff below King Edward Park, with the ocean right at the edge and the water a deep emerald green.
It's for confident swimmers only. There's no lifeguard, no toilets, and a steep set of stairs down, and waves wash in when there's any swell. Check the conditions and go at low tide.

Merewether Ocean Baths
Closed on cleaning Thursdays

The biggest ocean baths in the Southern Hemisphere, so there's always room, even on the hottest weekend. The main pool is about 100 metres long, and there's a separate, shallower pool for kids.
It's also the easiest pool for prams and wheelchairs, with ramps from the car park straight into the water, and lifeguards from 9am to 5.30pm every day until April.

Best time to visit

Early morning is the sweet spot at every pool: the water's calmest, the light is beautiful and parking is easy. Weekdays are far quieter than weekends, and school holidays are the busiest time of year.
When the surf is big, the baths are the safer swim, but large swells still crash over the walls, especially at high tide. Never turn your back on the ocean.
Upcoming cleaning days
The two big baths close for the whole day while council drains and cleans them. Here are the next ones from the City of Newcastle schedule. Council can move a clean if the surf, tide or weather turns, so check its page on the day.
| Date | Closed all day |
|---|---|
| Thursday 22 October | Merewether Ocean Baths |
| Wednesday 28 October | Newcastle Ocean Baths and the Canoe Pool |
| Thursday 29 October | Merewether Ocean Baths |
| Wednesday 4 November | Newcastle Ocean Baths and the Canoe Pool |
| Thursday 5 November | Merewether Ocean Baths |
| Wednesday 11 November | Newcastle Ocean Baths and the Canoe Pool |
Swim them all on the Bathers Way
All four pools sit on the Bathers Way, a 6km coastal walk. Start with a dawn swim at Merewether, walk north past Bar Beach and up through King Edward Park, drop down for a dip at the Bogey Hole if the sea is flat, and finish at Newcastle Ocean Baths with a sunbake on the steps.
Then reward yourself with a coffee in the East End: our cafe guide has the best spots a short walk from the baths.
Run a kiosk, swim school or cafe near the baths?
We choose every spot in our guides and never sell them. If you run an independent business near the water, you can get a proper Made in Newy profile and keep your details up to date.

Questions people ask
Are Newcastle's ocean baths free?
Yes. Newcastle Ocean Baths, the Canoe Pool, the Bogey Hole and Merewether Ocean Baths are all free.
Can you take dogs to the ocean baths?
No. Dogs aren't allowed in the pool areas at Newcastle or Merewether Ocean Baths.
When are the ocean baths closed for cleaning?
Newcastle Ocean Baths and the Canoe Pool shut all day every Wednesday. Merewether shuts all day on set Thursdays: every week from September to December, every second week through winter. Council can move a clean if the surf, tide or weather turns.
Do the ocean baths have lifeguards?
Yes, the two big ones. Merewether has a lifeguard from 9am to 5.30pm every day until 26 April 2027, and Newcastle Ocean Baths is watched from the lifeguard lookout built into the pavilion in 2023. The Bogey Hole has no lifeguard.
Which ocean bath is best for kids?
The Canoe Pool, next to Newcastle Ocean Baths. It's shallow and calm, so it suits toddlers and little swimmers. Merewether has its own learners pool. Skip the Bogey Hole with young kids.
Can you swim in the ocean baths when the surf is big?
They're calmer than the beach, but big swell still crashes over the walls and surges through the pools, especially at high tide. The Bogey Hole is dangerous in any real swell.
What time do the change rooms open?
5.30am every day, at both Newcastle Ocean Baths and Merewether Ocean Baths.
How we made this guide
We read the City of Newcastle's ocean baths page and its July to December 2026 cleaning schedules on 3 October 2026, and checked access, parking and history against the sources below. Each pool's open-today line uses the council's dates; we update this guide when the council posts a new schedule.
