Newcastle beaches: which one to go to today
Six city beaches, from sheltered Nobbys to the surf at Merewether. Here's which one suits you, whether lifeguards are on today, where to park and where to get a coffee after.
Newcastle has six city beaches, all free, from Nobbys at the harbour mouth south to Merewether, plus Stockton across the water. Pick the one that suits you below: each shows whether lifeguards are on today.
Two of the beaches have a kiosk on the sand that opens before 6am: both are in our Newcastle breakfast guide.
Nobbys Beach
Lifeguards all year

A sheltered beach tucked under Nobbys Head, where the waves usually stay under a metre. Council calls it one of the safest swimming beaches in Newcastle, it's a favourite with families and people learning to surf, and lifeguards watch it all year round.
After your swim, walk the breakwall out towards Nobbys Lighthouse, or start the Bathers Way coastal walk, which begins here and runs south to Merewether.

It's also one of the most hazardous beaches on the coast, with three permanent rips. Surf Life Saving Australia counts about 92 rescues here a year, the most at any beach outside Sydney, so swim between the flags.

Rips and staying safe
Newcastle's beaches face the open ocean, and Surf Life Saving Australia rates most of them 6 or 7 out of 10 for hazards. Rips are the main danger: a calm-looking dark gap between the breaking waves is often one.
If you're caught in one, stay calm, float, put your hand up and call for help. Don't swim against it. And check the conditions before you go in, or ask a lifeguard.
Taking the dog
Dogs aren't allowed on Newcastle's patrolled beaches or in the ocean baths, and council fines owners who bring them. The exception is Horseshoe Beach, on the harbour side of Nobbys, where dogs can run off-leash from sunrise to sunset. Across the harbour, Pitt Street Reserve in Stockton is off-leash too, and Dixon Park Reserve above the beach is off-leash from sunrise to 9am and 5pm to sunset.
Walk them all on the Bathers Way

The Bathers Way is a 6km coastal walk from Nobbys Beach to Merewether Ocean Baths. It passes Newcastle Beach and its ocean baths, King Edward Park and the Bogey Hole, the Memorial Walk above Bar Beach, and Dixon Park on the way. Start early and finish with a coffee at Merewether, or do it in reverse and end in the East End.
Our cafe guide has the best stops at both ends.
Run a kiosk, surf school or cafe near the beach?
We choose every spot in our guides and never sell them. If you run an independent business near the water, you can get a proper Made in Newy profile and keep your details up to date.

How we made this guide
We read the City of Newcastle's beach pages and its 2026-27 lifeguard patrol times, Surf Life Saving Australia's Beachsafe listing for each beach and council's off-leash dog areas on 5 October 2026. Each beach's lifeguard line uses council's published dates and hours, worked out on the day you look. Photos are from Wikimedia Commons, credited on each picture.
