When Dunns Butchers in New Lambton needed its corner shopfront repainted, the job went to an Edgeworth painter who works for himself.
Jye Hughes runs Hughesys Painting and is a licensed painter and decorator (NSW licence 476719C).
Much of the work people can see from the street is commercial: the butcher, a Newcastle salon, a childcare centre and a landlord's rentals.
A corner shop on a busy street
The Dunns Butchers job meant painting a corner shop under a wide awning, working around a lot of glass.

The salon
The owner of a Newcastle salon he painted described him in a Google review as “reliable and efficient with his time.”
VJ panelling at a childcare centre
At a childcare centre, he painted the walls and the VJ panelling, the grooved boards common in older Newcastle buildings.

Fit-outs, offices and rentals
His job photos also show fit-outs and offices, painted while the rooms were empty.
One landlord called the finish on their rental “flawless” and is booking him for the rest of their properties.

What his customers mention
He has nine Google reviews, all five stars, and the cleanup comes up more often than the colour.
“He made sure everything was cleaned up afterwards, something not all tradespeople take care of,” wrote Jackie, whose house he painted.
Joanne said he “kept everything clean and tidy throughout the job.”
Eric called him “meticulous in cleaning and preparation.”
How he quotes
Jye looks at each job before giving a written quote, and the Hughesys Painting website says the approved price is the price paid.
The site also says commercial work is scheduled around trading hours.
He works across Newcastle, Lake Macquarie and the Hunter, and bookings go to him directly.
Harry, his most recent reviewer, summed him up in three words: “A thorough professional.”
